What to Expect During a Dental Crown Procedure

When it comes to maintaining a healthy smile, dental crowns play a significant role in restoring both function and aesthetics. Whether you’re experiencing severe decay, a broken tooth, or need a cosmetic adjustment, understanding the dental crown procedure can ease any anxiety you might have. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through what to expect during a dental crown procedure at PS Dental in Bristol and Glastonbury, CT.

Why a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns, also known as tooth crowns, are used to cover and protect weak or damaged teeth. They can also be employed for cosmetic improvements. Crowns are versatile and can strengthen a tooth, restore its shape, and improve its appearance. Knowing why you need a dental crown is the first step in understanding how it can benefit you.

Protecting Your Tooth

One of the main reasons for getting a dental crown is to protect a weakened tooth. Damaged teeth are susceptible to further issues like fractures or decay. A dental crown acts as a shield, covering the entire visible portion of the tooth and providing it with the strength it needs to function normally.

Restoring Functionality

Damaged or decayed teeth can make it difficult to chew or speak properly. A dental crown restores the tooth’s original shape and functionality, making everyday activities easier and more comfortable. This is particularly important if the affected tooth is one of your molars, which play a key role in chewing.

Cosmetic Enhancement

If you have a misshapen or discolored tooth, a dental crown can significantly improve its appearance. Modern crowns are designed to look like natural teeth, blending seamlessly with the rest of your smile. This can boost your confidence and make you feel better about your dental health.

How is a Dental Crown Done?

Preparation is crucial for a successful dental crown procedure. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to expect during the preparation phase at PS Dental.

Initial Consultation

Your dental crown procedure begins with an initial consultation. During this visit, your dentist will examine your teeth and take X-rays to assess the extent of the damage. This helps determine whether a dental crown is the appropriate solution for your dental issue.

Tooth Shaping

Once it’s confirmed that you need a crown, the next step is shaping the affected tooth. Your dentist will remove any decay and shape the tooth to fit the crown. If a large portion of the tooth is missing, a filling material may be used to build it up so it can support the crown properly.

Impressions

After shaping the tooth, your dentist will take an impression of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. This impression is sent to a dental lab where your custom crown will be fabricated. At PS Dental, we offer same day crowns, allowing you to skip the waiting period and get your permanent crown in a single visit.

The Temporary Crown

While you wait for your permanent crown, a temporary crown will be placed over the shaped tooth to protect it. This temporary crown is usually made of acrylic and is not as durable as the permanent one, so you’ll need to take special care to avoid damaging it.

Care Tips

Avoid sticky and hard foods that could dislodge or damage the temporary crown. It’s also important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing gently around the temporary crown.

Sensitivity

You may experience some sensitivity in the affected tooth while wearing the temporary crown. This is normal and should subside once the permanent crown is placed. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any discomfort.

Follow-Up

Your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one. This usually happens within a couple of weeks, but with same day crowns at PS Dental, this step can often be skipped.

Placing the Permanent Crown

The final step in the dental crown procedure is placing the permanent crown. Here’s what to expect when you return to PS Dental for your crown placement.

Removing the Temporary Crown

Your dentist will start by removing the temporary crown and cleaning the tooth underneath. This ensures that there’s no debris or decay that could affect the fit of the permanent crown.

Fitting the Permanent Crown

Before cementing the permanent crown in place, your dentist will check its fit and color. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure that the crown fits perfectly and matches the surrounding teeth.

Cementing the Crown

Once the fit and color are perfect, the permanent crown is cemented onto your tooth. The dentist will use a special dental adhesive to secure the crown, ensuring it stays in place and functions like a natural tooth.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Taking care of your new dental crown is essential for its longevity and effectiveness. Here are some tips to help you maintain your crown.

Good Oral Hygiene

Continue to brush and floss regularly to keep your crown and the surrounding teeth clean. Use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth if you experience any discomfort.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

Regular visits to PS Dental will help ensure that your crown remains in good condition. Your dentist can check for any issues and clean areas that are hard to reach with regular brushing and flossing.

Avoiding Hard Foods

Although dental crowns are durable, it’s best to avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or hard candy. This will help prevent any potential damage to the crown.

Had my cleaning done with Amanda who was incredibly thorough and such a pleasure to chat with. Had my cleaning done about 20 minutes after being shook by the little earthquake so my anxiety level was a little high. Amanda was gentle and very informative throughout the cleaning. She made me feel calm and relaxed in her care. Dr. Sinha then came in to check my X-rays and my teeth. I love that he takes his time and doesn’t rush through. He offers great explanation into his decision making process and I think he’s one the most honest dentists I have encountered. The energy in this practice is so positive and it was all around a great experience. They stay up to date with the newest advances in dental care and the office is super clean. I am happy to be a patient here. 💯 recommend to anyone who cares about their teeth and is looking for a great dentist. Thank you guys for being so awesome!❤️
