Crowns and Bridges

What are the Health Benefits of a Dental Crown?

Over the course of your life, teeth can become worn, cracked decayed or damaged in other ways. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth.

Dental crowns are intended to restore strength to these teeth by covering the entire biting surface and sides of the tooth down to the gums. If a tooth is broken significantly or has a prior Root Canal Therapy performed, a ceramic or porcelain crown is placed on the tooth to restore it back to normal and give the tooth strength to function.

Essentially, a dental crown protects your tooth against further damage and deterioration by providing a protective barrier surrounding the tooth. At PS Dental, we incorporate our high-quality crowns to restore vigor to your bite while at the same time offering tremendous aesthetic benefits.

What Does a Dental Crown Procedure Entail?

The procedure to fit a dental crown typically requires at least two visits to our office. During the first visit, we remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown. Following this, during the second visit we will remove the temporary crown and then fit and adjust the final crown. To complete the procedure, we cement the crown into place.

Am I a Candidate for A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are a reasonable option to address a range of dental issues. To be a candidate for a dental crown, it’s important to be in good general and oral health. The best way to determine your eligibility is to request a consultation with an experienced dentist.

Dental crowns can preserve and protect your oral health, while improving your confidence in your smile. For more detailed information on dental crowns at our Glastonbury, CT practice and to book an examination contact us today or call 860-266-1828.

What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges have been known as the primary method for tooth replacement over the past several decades. The most common type of dental bridges are the fixed bridge, which includes an artificial tooth to fill the gap and two crowns to anchor that tooth.

Here at PS Dental, we’re extensively trained in dental bridges, which fill gaps with natural-looking artificial teeth, help minimize chewing and speaking problems and provide overall added strength to the mouth.

What are the Benefits of Dental Bridges?

There are several main benefits to dental bridges, including:

  • Restoration of a natural smile
  • Restored ability to speak and chew with optimal functionality
  • Proper bite distribution
  • Prevention of drifting/shifting of other teeth
  • Bridges can last many years with good care

What Does a Dental Bridge Procedure Entail?

Using a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth entails a relatively painless, two-step process. During your first visit to the dental office, we modify the teeth that will anchor your bridge, enabling proper fitting of the dental crowns that all stabilize the artificial tooth. After these teeth are prepared, we take impressions. The mold of your teeth is then sent off to a dental lab, which will create your all ceramic final restoration. You will be fitted with a temporary bridge to support chewing and appearance and will be scheduled for you next visit.

During the second visit, we’ll remove the temporary bridge and the final restoration will be assessed for optimal fit. Typically, this includes a “bite check” to ensure opposing teeth fit together when you bite down. If at all necessary, alterations can be made while you wait, although usually only minor revisions are needed, if any. Once you and your dentist are happy wit the look and feel of the new dental bridge, it will be bonded into place.
