Root Canals In Bristol, CT

What Is a Root Canal, and When Do You Need One?

A root canal is an endodontic treatment for relieving pain and reducing inflammation in an infected or abscessed tooth. You might require this procedure if you have dental decay that extends beyond the dentin and into the tooth’s core.

Process of Getting a Root Canal

Diagnosis and Anesthesia Administration

The first step in the root canal process is consulting Dr. Sinha about your toothache and dental decay. He’ll examine your teeth and take X-rays to determine the severity of your dental decay. A root canal is only necessary for moderate to severe dental decay. If that’s the case, we’ll inject a local anesthetic into the gums near the affected tooth, numbing the entire region.

Access Opening and Pulp Removal

Once numb, Dr. Sinha will place a dental dam on the affected tooth to prevent the saliva flow to the tooth. He’ll then use a dental drill to create a small opening on the top crown of the affected tooth to access the pulp cavity and root canals. Specialized instruments will then be used to remove the damaged pulp. Dr. Sinha will finish by cleaning the canals before proceeding to the next step.

Disinfection and Filling

With the canals clean, Dr. Sinha will irrigate them with an antimicrobial solution to eliminate bacteria in the tooth’s core. He’ll then fill the void with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to prevent the entry of bacteria and re-infection of the tooth. Gutta-percha is bio-compatible and produces a fluid-tight seal.

Sealing and Restoration

Lastly, Dr. Sinha will place a permanent filling on the access hole to seal it. Patients with severe tooth damage might require a dental crown to structure the mutilated tooth. If so, Dr. Sinha will install a dental crown on top of the tooth, before sending you home with instructions for taking care of the tooth.

Does a Root Canal Weaken My Tooth?

Drilling the tooth and removing the inner tissue at the core, could compromise your tooth’s structural integrity, but not always. If it does, the dentist will install a restoration, like a dental crown to restore the tooth’s strength and structure.
