Pain After Root Canal: What You Should Know

Root canal therapy, provided by the expert team at PS Dental, is a common procedure designed to save your natural tooth and alleviate pain. But what happens when you experience discomfort post-treatment? Let’s take a look.

UNDERSTANDING ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure that treats infection or inflammation in the tooth’s root. It involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning, disinfecting the root canal, and sealing it. Despite its reputation, the procedure is usually no more uncomfortable than a regular filling. However, it’s normal to experience some level of discomfort or sensitivity after the procedure, which should subside within a few days.

CAUSES OF PAIN AFTER ROOT CANAL

Pain after root canal therapy can occur for several reasons. It might be due to inflammation in the surrounding tissues, irritation from the procedure itself, or even a tiny branch of the root left untreated. In rare cases, the original infection might have spread, causing continued discomfort. It’s important to note that while some pain or sensitivity is normal, prolonged or severe pain may indicate a complication and should be addressed by your dentist.

MANAGING PAIN AFTER ROOT CANAL

Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically sufficient to manage post-procedure discomfort. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can also help. Avoid chewing hard foods with the treated tooth until it’s fully recovered. If the pain persists or intensifies, it’s crucial to reach out to your dentist. They may prescribe stronger pain medication or suggest additional treatments.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES AFTER ROOT CANAL THERAPY

To minimize discomfort and promote healing after root canal therapy in Glastonbury, it’s important to follow certain preventive measures. Stick to soft foods for a few days to reduce pressure on the treated tooth. Also, maintain a diligent oral hygiene routine, but be gentle around the treated area to avoid irritation. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol as they can hinder the healing process.

THE HEALING PROCESS

It’s helpful to understand what a normal healing process looks like post-root canal therapy. You may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity to pressure for a few days, which gradually decreases. The tissue around the treated tooth may feel sore, but this too should go away with time. Complete healing usually occurs within a few weeks.

WHEN TO SEEK FURTHER TREATMENT

If your pain is severe or is accompanied by swelling or a return of the original symptoms, it’s time to seek further treatment. Dr. Sinha at PS Dental is committed to ensuring your root canal therapy is successful and as comfortable as possible. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re experiencing any concerns post-procedure.

Had my cleaning done with Amanda who was incredibly thorough and such a pleasure to chat with. Had my cleaning done about 20 minutes after being shook by the little earthquake so my anxiety level was a little high. Amanda was gentle and very informative throughout the cleaning. She made me feel calm and relaxed in her care. Dr. Sinha then came in to check my X-rays and my teeth. I love that he takes his time and doesn’t rush through. He offers great explanation into his decision making process and I think he’s one the most honest dentists I have encountered. The energy in this practice is so positive and it was all around a great experience. They stay up to date with the newest advances in dental care and the office is super clean. I am happy to be a patient here. 💯 recommend to anyone who cares about their teeth and is looking for a great dentist. Thank you guys for being so awesome!❤️

I was in search of a new dentist after relocating to the area. Came across PS Dental and was very pleased with the overall service, quant office and service team. Amanda (hygienist) was very professional and her cleaning was painless. Morgan (front office) response time was beyond expectations and she was able to answer my many inquiries. 10/10 experience overall and I will be having my wife come over as a new patient hopefully soon!
