Can A Root Canal Be Done Through A Crown?

Have you been wondering, “Can a root canal be done through a crown?” If so, this blog is for you. We’ll delve into this question, offering you insights and clarity on this complex procedure.

UNDERSTANDING ROOT CANALS

A root canal is a common dental procedure aimed at saving a tooth that’s severely infected or decayed. It involves removing the tooth’s pulp and nerve, then cleaning and sealing the inside of the tooth. If left untreated, the tissue surrounding the tooth could become infected and abscesses may form.

THE ROLE OF DENTAL CROWNS

A dental crown is essentially a “cap” that’s placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength, and to improve its appearance. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth, or after a root canal procedure to protect the fragile tooth.

CAN A ROOT CANAL BE DONE THROUGH A CROWN?

Yes, a root canal can indeed be performed through an existing crown. The procedure is similar to a regular root canal, but with the added complexity of working through the crown. The dentist will drill a small hole through the crown to access the pulp chamber. Once the root canal procedure is completed, the hole is filled with a restorative material.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE

During a root canal, you can expect the highest level of care from our team at PS Dental. Dr. Sinha will ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure, using local anesthesia to numb the area. You might feel some pressure, but generally, the procedure is painless.

POST-PROCEDURE CARE

After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort or sensitivity, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups at PS Dental, to ensure the longevity of your crown and overall oral health.

CHOOSING BETWEEN REPAIRING OR REPLACING A CROWN POST-ROOT CANAL

Sometimes, after a root canal through a crown, the decision must be made whether to repair the existing crown or replace it entirely. This decision depends on the condition of the crown post-procedure and the extent of the intervention needed during the root canal. If the crown is relatively new and the access hole made for the root canal can be adequately sealed, repairing may be sufficient. However, if the crown is older or if the structural integrity of the crown has been compromised, replacement might be the best option to ensure the long-term health of the tooth. At PS Dental, Dr. Sinha will carefully evaluate your crown and provide a recommendation based on the specific conditions of your tooth and crown.

Had my cleaning done with Amanda who was incredibly thorough and such a pleasure to chat with. Had my cleaning done about 20 minutes after being shook by the little earthquake so my anxiety level was a little high. Amanda was gentle and very informative throughout the cleaning. She made me feel calm and relaxed in her care. Dr. Sinha then came in to check my X-rays and my teeth. I love that he takes his time and doesn’t rush through. He offers great explanation into his decision making process and I think he’s one the most honest dentists I have encountered. The energy in this practice is so positive and it was all around a great experience. They stay up to date with the newest advances in dental care and the office is super clean. I am happy to be a patient here. 💯 recommend to anyone who cares about their teeth and is looking for a great dentist. Thank you guys for being so awesome!❤️

I don’t have many dental experiences since I was a child usually I went with one place for a long period of time. I found this dentist a few years ago and I’ll honestly say, they’re fantastic. Everyone somewhere and someone have something to complain about but with them not one complaint. Please use them as your regular. You won’t be disappointed with your results.

Amanda (hygienist) was very professional and her cleaning was painless. Morgan (front office) response time was beyond expectations and she was able to answer my many inquiries. 10/10 experience overall and I will be having my wife come over as a new patient hopefully soon!
